Yin-yang Project. Real Ceiling

We have re-edited Yin Yang Project again from IE University in collaboration with the municipality of Segovia. The structure designed and mounted during the course Construction Systems III under the coordination of Professor Fermin Blanco, can be seen in the Mint (Casa de la Moneda).

“Real Ceiling” is the result of a workshop based on the use of wood in architecture. After the system approach, the team has been focused on two intensive sessions; a theoretical framework to open the discussion and the practical part to create and mount the structure during an eminently practical session.

The main educational goal of this experience is creating the proper atmosphere for teamwork, discussion and ideas debate. All of this by using wood, modular and removable systems and as a working tool.

Beyond the final solution, (as a result of different parameters) the importance here is based on the process. CONSTRUCTION as life, is a PROCESS.

We hope you will enjoy the pictures!

Dozuki, the japanese saw

This is our new “toy”, Dozuki or Japanese saw, that will be useful during next times to cut the tenons – connectors.
In order to understand the tool accuracy , we must understand its philosophy. Bruno Mari in his book “Da cosa nasce cosa” (1981) talked us about the strong relationship between the form of the objects and its use or function, and he supported his explanation by using, among others, Dozuki as an example.

Dozuki is a wooden saw, that as other Japanese traditional tools is different from western tools in relation with the cut direction. While western saws cut by push action, Japanese one cut by pull (the opposite). This fact, also means a change in the carpenter position during cutting, it is not necessary push with the body in the cut direction as western carpenters do. In this case we use gravity in our benefit so we maintain the handle in the button part and the blame up.

This use is safer (overall in case of break) so the blade can be extremely thin
and we obtain accuracy and clean cuts.
Dozukis have had an important role in traditional Japanese joinery and can be used to cut softwood or hardwood.

The finishing of wood before cut can be seen in the images and also the great appearance of our Dozuki. It is a pretty object itself because its came from a coherent philosophy based on its use.

Description & Pictures
Workshops on the work of sculptor Eduardo Chillida arise in close collaboration with the didactic and documentation team of the Chillida Leku.

As a result of this relationship, family and children´s workshops take place in the Museum facilities using the Lupo system (specially the Super Lupo material). Also a special edition of Eco Lupo, the Chillida Lupo case, is published focusing on Chillida famous pieces.

The Case
All pieces are collected in a case formed by the pieces themselves. The assembly and disassembly of the case is proposed as a first approach to the decomposition of the cube.

The challenges included in the workshops are based on the sculptural pieces of Chilled. Depending on the degree of difficulty are adapted to children, special education or family´s groups.

We have also developed workshops in other cities taking advantage of the presence of works by Chillida in landmarks such as the case of the sculpture “Lo Profundo Es El Aire” on the outside of the National Sculpture Museum Valladolid.

Other workshops such as those conducted with university students delve into the interesting relationship of form and structure that sustains them.
